Scot Lahaie, M.F.A.
Assistant Professor & Director of Theater

After earning a BFA in Drama in 1983 from Sam Houston State University, Scot Lahaie worked as Theater Manager for the Keller Theater in Giessen, Germany (a part of the US Army Entertainment Program in Europe). He was later promoted to Entertainment Director for the Giessen Military Community, which included the responsibilities of Artistic Director for the Keller Theater. In that capacity, he has participated as either director, designer, or actor in over 60 shows. He returned to the US in 1995 to pursue graduate studies in Theater Arts at Baylor, where he earned a Masters of Arts in Theater History and Dramatic Criticism with thesis in 1996 and a Masters of Fine Arts in Stage Directing in 2000. Upon completing his graduate work, Professor Lahaie taught for three years at Baylor University before joining Gardner-Webb's faculty as Director of Theater in January 2003.

Christopher Keene, M.F.A.

Mr. Keene received his BA in Technical Theatre from California State University, Long Beach, where he studied makeup under the direction of T. William Smith. He worked for several years in the Los Angeles area as a makeup artist and prop master. He was a makeup artist for Knott’s Berry Farm’s Scream Team and a prosthetic and prop sculptor for Six Flag’s Magic Mountain. His credits also include makeup for music videos by Danny Elfman and the Talking Heads. In 1994, he relocated to Nashville where he toured with the missionary mime team “All The World’s A Stage.” While in Nashville, he also worked as head of the makeup department for Opryland USA’s Howl-0-ween, as well as a makeup artist for the Nashville Opera’s Aida. He also designed props for the Tennessee Repertory Theatre and the Nashville Shakespeare Festival. In 1998, Chris accepted a graduate assistantship at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, where he received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Stage Properties in 2001. While there, he also worked on “La Traviata” for the Piedmont Opera, “Henry IV, part one” for the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and “ Having Our Say” for the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem. In 2001, Mr. Keene taught as a Visiting Instructor and Technical Director at Doane College in Lincoln, Nebraska. He worked as a guest designer on campus productions of The Other Heart, The Last Flapper, and The Hobbit. In 2002, Chris joined the faculty of GWU.

Jim Lawrence, Ph.D.

Dr. Lawrence teaches our core course in scriptwriting (COMM 310)--a class required of all theater majors and minors--and Acting for the Camera, as well as a host of Communication courses in television and film. Dr. Lawrence brings a wealth of experience from both the film industry and the academy and rounds out our teaching curriculum with great expertise. He holds the Ph.D. in Theater from Florida State University, the M.A. in Theater from California State University at Northridge, and the B.A. in Religion and Sociology from Pfeiffer University. Dr. Lawrence spent several years in Los Angeles working in film and television. He is a member of both the Writers Guild and Directors Guild, wrote several 2-hour movies for network television: "Child of Glass" and "The Sky Trap" for Walt Disney Prods.; "Missing Children: A Mother's Story" for Warner Bros./CBS. He also wrote and directed "Truce In The Forest," a multiple-award-winning Christmas film. He has also been active in the theater, directing plays for the Downey Civic Light Opera, Whittier-La Mirada Civic Light Opera, Burbank Civic Light Opera, and Asheville Community Theatre. Of special note, Dr. Lawrence has just published his third novel, "The Surrounding."
Of special note: Dr. Lawrence is shooting an original film during the fall 2004 semester using theater students in the leading and secondary roles. The film will be available as DVD early next year.

Matthew Marlowe
Assistant Technical Director (Dover Theater)

Matthew has been actively involved in our company since 2001, and has worked on every production since that time. Matthew works mainly with set construction and stage lighting. His work upon the set of The House of Barnarda Alba helped win an MTA nomination for set design. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies from Gardner-Webb in May of 2005, and is currently working toward his Master of Divinity. In his spare time he likes to play the guitar, read about military aviation, and hand craft tobacco pipes.

Steven Walters
Visiting Playwright 2004

Steven Walters is resident playwright at Second Thought Theatre in Dallas, Texas. Steven graduated from Baylor University with a BFA in Theater Performance and a minor in Telecommunications. His plays have been produced at the Addison Theater Center, Baylor University, the American Heart Association, Casa Manana, and Gardner-Webb University. His play DUELality was part of Gardner-Webb University’s inaugural New Plays Festival and was subsequently published in New Plays Festival, Volume One: New One-Act Plays by Emerging American Playwrights. Steven has performed professionally with Casa Manana in Ft. Worth, the Shakespeare Festival of Dallas, the Peterborough Players in New Hampshire, and at the Lost Nation Theater in Montpelier, Vermont. His favorite acting credits include Berowne in Love’s Labors Lost, Epihodov in The Cherry Orchard, Hal in Proof, and Touchstone in As You Like It.
